Description
Because his season of bloom overlaps the Ilex verticillata and Ilex serrata cultivars, ‘Apollo’ is the stud of choice for many female winterberry hollies, such as Winter Red. He grows in an upright rounded shape to around 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide and will thrive in sun or part shade. Leaves are a lustrous medium green with tips of new growth an attractive burgundy color. Apollo is essential for enjoying the female berry bling!
Note: Apollo will pollinate five or more female winterberry hollies that are growing within 100 feet. That said. closer is better.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, the Apollo Holly is excellent for use to pollinate female winterberry hollies, such as Winter Red and other Ilex verticillata and Ilex serrata cultivars. One Apollo can pollinate 5 or more females growing within 100 feet so only one of this super stud is needed for an average size yard. Excellent for use in moist areas or along the banks of streams, ponds and other bodies of water. A fine addition to bird gardens, berry gardens, red color theme gardens and native habitats.
Suggested Spacing:  5 to 6 feet apart for hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Winterberry hollies are very easy to grow in consistently moist to wet acidic soils of average or better fertility. They are adaptable to both light and heavy soils and grow well in poorly drained soils including boggy, wet conditions. Generally one male winterberry holly will be sufficient for pollinating 5 to 10 female plants. Flowers are born on new growth so you can prune to shape in late winter or early spring.

After years of waiting for my winterberry bushes to produce some berries I finally figured out I had only females. I purchased 3-3 gal Apollo male winterberries, they arrived quickly, very well packaged in good foliage and not dried out. They’ve been planted for about a month and look great. I fertilized with some root stimulant and am making sure they stay well watered. So far everything is great and with any luck I’ll have some winterberries on my bushes next spring!—————————————–I love these plants, good luck with the berries! Thanks for the great review! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
This plant, was challenging to find. Fortunately, Wilson Bros offered it, as the apollo male is required to pollinate three holly(s) I purchased. Certainly, the plant is not a show-stopper, but is gradually coming around. I have faith, it will as the couple of handful of plants Wilson’s sent me, all are faring very well.—————————————We are glad you are pleased with your purchase! Hopefully it will flourish!! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
