Description

In 1998, the release of the first reblooming Encore Azalea changed the Azalea world forever. Since then, over 30 Encore varieties have been released. When provided enough sunlight (6 or more hours per day) all varieties bloom in spring and then repeat summer into fall.

With the longest bloom of any Encore variety, or any other purple flowering Azalea, it’s no wonder ‘Autumn Royalty’ was voted AZALEA OF THE YEAR by the American Rhododendron Society. The ones in our central Georgia gardens produce their vibrant 3.5 inch diameter flowers almost year round, in sun or shade! One of the most cold hardy Encore Azaleas, the large, arrow-shaped evergreen leaves of Autumn Royalty are similar in appearance to the Southern Indica Azaleas. Excellent as a specimen, in groupings, as a natural hedge, or in home foundation plantings.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide, Autumn Royalty Encore Azalea is a perfect choice for groupings, mass plantings, mid-size hedges or an accent in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It is also a fine selection for growing in large containers and pots, which can be strategically placed to dress up decks, patios, porches, and other outdoor living spaces. Because they like sun to part shade, Encores do quite well under tall trees and in woodland borders. Butterflies love the flowers, and blooming branches serve very well for cutting to create stunning indoor floral arrangements.

Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Encore Azalea variety is not winter hardy outdoors, you can enjoy it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

We’ve been growing Encore Azaleas in our gardens since they were first released in the 1990’s and can say with confidence that when planted right, and in the right spot, Encore Azaleas are among the easiest azaleas easy to grow.

Soil: When planted in the ground, Encore Azaleas adapt well to most soil types. In general, like all other azaleas, the Encores prefer an organically rich, moist but well-drained acidic soil. Constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic for azaleas. Heavy clay, quick-draining sand, or otherwise poor soils are best amended with organic matter or other soil amendments to provide sufficient nutrients, better soil drainage, and/or moisture retention.

In containers, a 50/50 blend of professional potting mix and potting soil is suggested. Make sure the pot has a hole(s) in the bottom that allow for sufficient drainage. As mentioned above, Encore Azaleas do not like a constantly soggy soil.

Sun: Encore Azaleas will grow in sun or part shade. For best flowering and reblooming, we recommend at least 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. All-day lightly filtered sun, such as under tall trees, is okay. In regions that experience very hot summers with intense sunlight, Encore Azaleas might appreciate a break from direct sun during the mid afternoon hours.

My plants all arrived in beautiful condition. They were planted the next day & directions carefully followed. It’s been very dry here but I’ve given it 1 gallon of water daily. It’s doing very well, hasn’t shown any signs of wilting and I’m anxiously awaiting the first blooms to appear (which may be next year) to see if it’s the lavender as pictured. Also, these plants arrived in the best condition of any I’ve ever had delivered. Looked beautiful out of the box – no broken stems, vibrant color, moist soil – and I was impressed by that. I also ordered a pink carnation autumn royalty azalea and it arrived in full bloom. The blooms are still beautiful and didn’t lose any in transportation nor after planting. Many online nurseries, I am convinced, field dig plants, sock their badly hacked root ball in a bucket and call it container grown. These Encore Azaleas were a part of the shipment we received about 2 weeks ago – we used them in front of the pink and white Encores to compliment them. Bought 3 plants. Shipped extremely well and arrived healthy. These azalea plants were nice and full. Kept them in the house for a couple days getting a nice healthy drink, then out on the front porch for a week to get acclimated. Now they are in the ground with some Biotone and adjusting nicely. The newest introduction: Autumn Bonfire is a really nice true fire-red that’s also a favorite. But really, I have all 31 varieties growing in my landscape and love them all. Each one is unique. I ordered the wrong azaleas for my daughters zone and had no trouble changing the same day. I called on a Saturday and talked to Spencer who was very helpful and said he would call me back to let me know if they had the correct one in stock for her zone. He did call back later in the afternoon and said there was no problem and the correct one would be shipped out on Monday. The azalea arrived and was in perfect condition and had bright purple flowers on it. Very large plant.

I received this azalea in very good condition from Wilson Bros Gardens. It was larger than I expected it to be. It is doing fine for me here on Anna Maria Island in Florida. I have it growing on the east side of my home where it gets some afternoon shade.

I appreciated the ease of ordering. My plants arrived in nice condition, are already planted, and look great. The website was very easy to navigate and the information and description of the items was very thorough. Thanks!
