Dove Tree (Davidia Involucrata) – 7 Gallon Pot (5-6′)

Few other trees in the world inspire such awe as Davidia involucrata, commonly known as the Dove Tree, Ghost Tree or Handkerchief Tree. It is the only tree in its own genus and the “flowers” are truly remarkable. The flowers themselves are a sphere of reddish-purple to black stamens about an inch and a half in diameter. But what makes the bloom so spectacular is that each spherical flower is surrounded by two large, pure white bracts of unequal size. The larger bract can be as much as 10 inches long and the shorter one 6 inches. In mid to late spring these abundant bracts hang from the horizontal branches fluttering in the slightest breeze like white doves sitting in the tree, hence the common name. Its heart shaped 4 to 6 inch leaves with toothed edges are rich green on top with a felty covering on their undersides, and are highly attractive in and of themselves. Ornamental nuts form after flowering starting out green and becoming purple as they mature. The tree’s gold to red fall foliage and exfoliating brown and orange bark adds interest during the cool seasons. Virtually pest and disease free, the Dove Tree is remarkable throughout the seasons, and one that is surely to be a conversation piece!

Note: Our Dove Trees are grown from rooted cuttings, which means they will bloom at a younger age than seed-grown trees. 

Growing 20 to 40 feet tall and equally as wide, the dove tree is ideal for use as a specimen in the sunny to partially shaded landscape. A sunny to partially shaded woodland border that provides a dark background to show off the flowers is perfect. Its larger size makes it a fine selection for around patios, decks and other outdoor spaces where it will provide some shade and can be viewed from close up. A fine addition to white theme gardens, Azalea gardens, Asian and Zen gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  50 feet apart for space between trees

The Dove Tree prefers a moist but well drained soil rich in organic matter and full sun to part shade. We suggest a planting site that is somewhat sheltered from high winds and might provide some afternoon shade in hot climates. A sunny to partially shaded woodland border is perfect and the dark background will help to show off the blooms.
