Description

‘Judith Hindle’ is a hardy perennial Pitcher Plant featuring deep berry-red pitchers with beautifully ruffled hoods painted with pink or white speckles. The colorful traps attract flies and other flying insects that venture into its tubes and are then trapped when the hood closes. Showy, fragrant, globular nodding flowers rise above the foliage in spring before new pictures fully develop. Judith Hindle is very showy in the fall retaining many of its leaves through winter. In USDA Zones 6a-8b, this Pitcher Plant will spread gradually to form small colonies outdoors in sunny sites with boggy soils and can also be grown as a houseplant indoors in pots in a well-lit space.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 14 inches tall and forming a small colony up to 18 inches wide, the Judith Hindle Pitcher Plant is ideal for use in sunny sites with a boggy soil or in containers that can be kept indoors or outdoors. This is an outstanding accent plant for the bog garden. Very nice as a solo in containers or to provide texture and color in combination container bog gardens. Also suitable for terrariums.

Suggested Spacing: 15 inches apart for mass plantings or solid border edging; 24 inches or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Pitcher Plant variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

This Pitcher Plant is very easy to grow in most any consistently moist soil of average fertility full to mostly sun. It prefers an acid soil ranging from 4.0 to 5.0 on the pH scale. Virtually maintenance free, we rarely fertilize it. In areas that experience colder winters the foliage may need to be groomed or cut back before new growth emerges in spring.

I love carnivorous plants, and this cold hardy pitcher plant was perfect for my zone. I put it in a downhill area of the garden that gets a lot of water after rainstorms. So I ordered these to have on hand as one of my favorite doctors said the pitcher plant can cure smallpox, and well you never know when we will have an outbreak of that lol. They arrived big and healthy looking, but I’m not sure I am taking proper care of them. They seem to need a lot of water.
