Description

A dramatic statement in the landscape, the spiky, upright lustrous deep green leaves of ‘Magenta Magic’ turn to purplish-mauve during the cool season. A dwarf, this selection forms a clump only 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, making it a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces and containers. What’s more, in spring, 2 to 3 feet tall spikes of white nodding flowers shoot above the foliage on established plants. Following the flowers are berries that the birds will thank you for but the deer will ignore. Tough and durable, Magenta magic can take the heat, dry conditions and a fair amount of neglect.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, the Magenta Magic Yucca is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny to mostly sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Looks very nice around garden ponds or in rock gardens near boulders and also makes a nice solo or centerpiece in containers of 14 inches or more in diameter. A fine addition to rock gardens and Xeriscape Gardens (low water needs when established). We like combining Yucca with other low water need plants such as junipers, barberry, abelia, ornamental grasses, and loropetalum.

Suggested Spacing: 5 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden North of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Yucca variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Magenta Magic Yucca prefers a lightly moist to dry well-drained soil in full sun or part shade. Good drainage is essential and it prefers a neutral to alkaline soil. Add agricultural limestone (pelletized lime) to acid soils to make more alkaline. No maintenance required except to remove spent flower stalks. Good drought tolerance when established though will appreciate an occasional watering during extended dry periods to perform its best.
