Description
A superb holly that you can grow as a large shrub or remove lower branches to form a very attractive small tree 15 to 20 feet in height, the Oakland Holly is admired for its distinct and handsome oak leaf-shaped leaves that emerge a burgundy color before maturing to a rich olive-green. The Oakland Holly is perfect for framing the corners of homes and other structures or in privacy screen plantings. It is self fruiting holly that does not need a pollinator to produce its abundant, bright red berries.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Oakland Holly is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or in single or staggered rows to form a solid privacy screen. It is excellent for framing the corners of tall homes or other structures. Great for use around swimming pools and other outdoor living and recreation spaces. The abundant crop of berries make it a welcome addition to bird and wildlife gardens and is a fine addition to holly gardens, cottage gardens and formal gardens.
Suggested Spacing:  7 to 8 feet apart for solid privacy screens and hedges;  18 feet or more apart for space between trees
Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Holly is not reliable winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
The Oakland Holly is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Alkaline soils result in chlorosis (yellowing of leaves) which can be corrected by the application of chelated iron and/or soil sulfur. More berries are produced in full to mostly sun however you can expect a good crop even with some shade. Four hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Minimal if an maintenance when left to grow natural. That said, many landscapers will perform an annual pruning to maintain a more formal appearance or to control size.

Important Note:  Any heavy pruning after spring flowering will reduce or eliminate berry production.

Dear WilsonBros Team,
I am extremely pleased that my Oakland Holly as expected to arrive this Sunday – well ahead of schedule.
This will be my first Oakland Holly purchased from you (2nd overall) and if its status is as good as its shipping experience (so far), I will be back for more.
Many Thanks.——————————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
We ordered three 3 gallon Oakland Hollies. They arrived to TX in just three days. I am putting in a hedge and planned to mix these with another shrub. After seeing how nice and healthy these were, we ALOMST cancelled our order for the other shrub and ordered more of these, but we eventually stuck with our original mixed shrub hedge. It could not have arrived in better shape!——————————————–Thanks for the photo! Beautiful!

Holly arrived when expected and in great shape. It was really packed well for shipping and sustained no damage in transit which has been a problem with other vendors. Will look at Wilson Bros first for future purchases. ——— WBG Reply: Hi Mike – Very glad to hear your Oakland Holly arrived safely after it’s cross-country trip! Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review as it helps others to know who we are and the quality of our plants. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We’re at your service! – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
I bought a variety of shrubs from you this spring…the oakland holly, gardenia, an abelia, and plum yew. They are scattered through my yard. I also planted a few other things from local nurseries. We had a really hot stretch for 2 weeks – mid-nineties – unusual for Charlottesville, Va. I watered diligently. Of the new plantings this spring, only yours came through unscathed! The others suffered various degrees of damage and I lost a couple of azaleas altogether. So, I will definitely be purchasing from you again! – Nancy Campbell ———- WBG Reply: Hi Nancy! – Thanks so much taking the time to provide your review, and for the compliments on our plants. Probably the reason why our plants do better than some others is that we have a very stringent irrigation and fertilization program. We don’t over saturate plants and never ever water at night, both of which can lead to unseen, harmful diseases that cause slow death or even shock when there are weather extremes that stress the already weakened plants. Too, we mostly use the best slow-release granular fertilizers instead of micro-feeding plants every day with liquid feed. Plants daily fed with liquid feed will often decline or shock after planting if not provided their regular dose of fertilizer and slowly weened off. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We’re at your service. Plant Long & Prosper! – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
I received a shipment from Wilson Brothers last week. It was gorgeous! All 6 of the Oakland Holly plants were healthy and thriving – nothing dried out or wilted. In fact they looked as good or better than the things in my local nursery. I was also really impressed with the customer service. I had a question about a pollinator for the holly and Brent got back to me within 30 minutes with the answer. The online information about plants is outstanding. I have been gardening for a long time and really enjoy trying new plants. The selection at Wilson Brothers is amazing. What a great place! ———— WBG Response – Hi Nancy. Thanks so much for taking the time to provide us and future visitors to Wilson Bros Gardens with your review. The Oakland Holly is a beauty…have several of them in a screen planting in my own landscape and they’re doing great. Oakland Holly is self fruiting, and does not need a pollinator to produce an abundance of colorful berries. Thanks again and let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We’re at your service! – Brent / Wilson Bros Gardens
