Description

Made in Brownwood, Texas, in 1963, ‘Pawnee’ Pecan has become very popular throughout the Western and Northern growing regions and is gaining in popularity in the Southeast as well. The most outstanding feature is its large nut size combined with very early nut maturity. The average harvest date for ‘Pawnee’ at Tifton, Georgia has been in the 3rd week of September. Nuts stagger their opening, with some shucks being open very early in September. Yields are very good and Pawnee produces a high-quality nut of medium to large size with 50-plus nuts per pound. Percent kernel is very good and stable and of excellent, high quality and flavor. Good resistant to aphids.

Aside from producing some of the most delicious nuts on earth, pecan trees make very nice shade trees in the edible landscape. Ornamental features include the attractive pinnately compound deep green leaves that turn golden-yellow in fall, and slate-grey color bark that has a lightly fissured texture.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 70 to 100 feet tall and 40 to 70 feet wide, the Pawnee Pecan Tree is ideal for use as a shade tree and beauty in large landscapes. Because the tree drops a lot of nuts in late summer into fall, we suggest planting at least 35 feet away from a home. A fine addition to edible landscapes, wildlife gardens and native gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 80 feet for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Pawnee Pecan tree is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, organically rich, well-drained soils and is intolerant of some shade. Very drought tolerant when established.
