Description
A compact tulip-type Magnolia perfect for smaller garden spaces where its larger growing cousins won’t fit, Pink Pyramid is a hybrid that might reach 12 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide over time. In early to mid spring striking bowl-shaped flowers with petals that are pink on the inside and reddish purple on the outside blushing out to bright pink open on almost every branch tip of the tree. This beauty starts blooming at a young age so there’s no waiting for years to see a flower display. The tree is clothed in thick, elongated, almost willowy dark green leaves that keep the tree handsome even when not in bloom. Pink Pyramid brings an elegant look to any sunny to lightly shaded small garden. It is also suitable for growing in large containers that can be situated on patios and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright habit and rounded form 12 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Pink Pyramid Magnolia is ideal for use as a specimen shrub or small tree in sunny landscape and woodland borders. It is also excellent for use as a small accent tree in home foundation plantings. As it grows taller lower branches can be removed to a desired height to form a highly attractive tree for use as a focal point specimen. Can also be grown in large pots, planters and containers of 18 inches or more in rim diameter. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, cut flower gardens and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Pink Pyramid Magnolia is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. She prefers full sun for best flowering, however will handle some partial shade. In the deep South, some shade during the hottest mid-afternoon hours of summer will be appreciated. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. In alkaline soils, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron to increase acidity. Pruning usually isn’t necessary, however stray branches can be pruned immediately after flowering in spring. Feed after flowering in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron or sulfur.
