Description
One of the Wilson brothers favorite perennial plants of all time, Brooks and Brent even named a popular music group they were members of in the 1990’s after it! ‘Powis Castle’ Artemisia is a magnificent hardy perennial sub-shrub with a fine texture, color and form that you just won’t find in any other plant on Earth. It is adored for its aromatic, finely divided, fern-like, soft-textured silver foliage that has a distinct, feathery appearance which can’t go unnoticed. Very easy to grow and super drought tolerant, in our Georgia gardens it grows in a low mound to maybe 2 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide.
‘Powis Castle’ was introduced in 1972 from the National Trust’s Powis Castle in Wales. Allan M. Armitage considers ‘Powis Castle’ to be “one of the finest plants in cultivation.” 1993 RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 24 inches tall and spreading to 6 feet or more without pruning, Powis Castle Artemisia is a textural and color plant ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in landscape or garden beds and rock gardens. Its foliage compliments just about any other type of plant. A fine addition to rock gardens, perennial gardens, cottage gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 36″ apart for groupings; 10 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Powis Castle Artemisia is very easy to grow provided it gets plenty of sun and is planted in very well-drained soils. Soggy or waterlogged soil is a killer. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established. The plant can be occasionally trimmed to control size.
