Description
Finally, a hardy purple fountain grass! Developed by a program at the University of Georgia, Princess Caroline Fountain Grass is an easy to grow, moderate to fast-growing perennial grass in USDA Zones 8a through 10b that features intense purple-maroon foliage summer to frost on large and impressive mounding plants with arching foliage. Unrivaled texture and color among perennial grasses!
Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide in an elegant mound of wide, dark purple arching leaves, ‘Princess Caroline’ Fountain Grass is a superb accent, grouping or natural hedge for summer color in the sunny landscape borders or large containers. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens and the texture and color provides wonderful contrast when used beside brightly colored flowers, leafy shrubs, trees, and perennial plants. Especially attractive around boulders and bodies of water. In zones where it’s an annual, it makes a great centerpiece or background plant in annual flower beds.
Spacing:  30 inches apart for mass plantings; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Zone 8a, where this Pennisetum variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Princess Caroline Fountain Grass is easy to grow when planted right, and in the right spot. It adapts to most soil types, provided the soil is well drained, and likes full sun to mostly sun. It’s drought tolerant when established, however will appreciate some water during extended periods without rain. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Cut foliage back to the ground before new growth begins to emerge in early spring.

My Princess Caroline arrived healthy and well today. Just wanted to let you know I’m very happy with them.

In the mornings it’s all purple wet and sticky.——————————We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
Great plant! Arrived in good shape despite it being too hot to ship live plants. It’s in the ground in a mix of sandy soil and clay amended with homemade compost. An unusual plant here, the one I saw is planted outside of an Ace Hardware. I searched online and found it here, along with some of it’s sisters.————————————We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
Oh my. We planted this about a year ago and it took off. When frost finally arrived here in south Louisiana, it was over 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide! Gardeners have a saying here that if you can find a plant that will tolerate our summer heat and humidity, it’s likely to grow twice as large as predicted. That certainly was the case with this beautiful plant. I’ve just added another one to my cart for another spot that needs a colorful, large, and fast-growing plant. Does anyone know whether it can be divided? I hope so because it’s overtaken the plants around it. I assume I’ll need a chain saw.———————————————————————–Hi Kathryn, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Princess Caroline Purple Fountain Grass. This is a different ornamental grass than I have seen locally. Arrived in great shape and are in the ground. Can’t wait til they mature. ——————— WBG Reply: Hi Arleen – Thanks for your review of the Princess Caroline Fountain Grass and hope you enjoy it for years to come. The leaves on the ones in my own gardens turn darker as the season progresses. Right now (mid-July) they’re a deep purple color…magnificent! I received my plant in the time allotted. The plant was in great shape. The plant was well protected in the box. I have it in the ground and it is doing well. ——————– WBG Reply: Hi Sheila – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review. Glad to hear your fountain grass is growing well!
