Description
In flower from mid fall to Christmas in our gardens, Purple Haze is a compact Camellia maturing to only 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, making it a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces where its larger growing cousins won’t fit. As with most other Camellia sasanqua varieties, Purple Haze shows off an abundance of double, rose-form flowers that open to a red to reddish purple aging to purplish blue. Excellent in groupings or as a low hedge in larger landscape borders for partially shaded areas. Morning and/or evening sun with some shade or filtered sun in the afternoon is perfect.
NOTE:  Like a blue Hydrangea, the flowers of Purple Haze Camellia will have more purple in acidic soils and red to red-purple in soils with a neutral pH. We have some in several locations and the ones in more shade seem to be more purple as well, but that could just be the shade making the flowers look darker in color. Purple Haze prefers an acid soil ranging from 5.0 to 6.0 on the pH scale. To increase soil acidity apply Soil Sulfur or Aluminum Sulfate as directed on the product label. The use of an composted organic matter as a mulch around the plant can also help to increase soil acidity. SEE: About Soil pH and How To Test and Adjust It
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Purple Haze Camellia is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a hedge in home foundation plantings and partially shaded landscape borders. Its smaller size also lends well for use in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to camellia gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders.
Suggested Spacing:  3.5 feet apart for solid hedge; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning and/or evening sun with shade or filtered sunlight during the afternoon hours is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.

I purchased two, 1-gallon pot sized camellias and had planned to wait a few weeks to see if some of the other varieties that I wanted would come available again. In the meantime, I went to another local nursery and picked up a few more camellias — these were considerably larger and relatively more mature plants — because I really liked the colors and the variety. Since then, my two, small camellias from Wilson Bros. are budding and blooming like crazy, while the ones I got elsewhere have buds that aren’t blooming, and worse — they look like they may have some sort of pest infestation or some kind of fungal infection. I’ll be taking those back and I plan to purchase all of my plants from Wilson Bros. in the future. The quality of their plants simply cannot be matched.———————————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
