Roman Candles Podocarpus Macrophyllus – 2 Gallon Pot

Growing 10 to 15 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide makes the Roman Candles Podocarpus ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural or clipped formal hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders. Some afternoon shade is preferred and we think this bright selection stands out more beautifully in a partially shaded environment with a dark background. Also nice as an accent or to frame the corners in home foundation plantings or in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to white theme gardens, Asian theme gardens and formal gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart for a solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Podocarpus is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers which can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Podocarpus is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full sun or part shade. While you can grow Roman Candles in full sun we’ve heard this one will appreciate some shade or filtered sun during the mid afternoon hours. Four or more hours of sun should be enough to keep it nice and full. It does not like a poorly drained constantly soggy or wet soil and is very drought and heat tolerant when established. Plants can be trimmed occasionally for shaping purposes. Cease pruning two months prior to the average first-frost date in your area.
