Description
Ruscus Bamboo is a unique, cold hardy shrub species known for its distinctive clump-forming habit with slightly wavy, slender canes and short, wide, dark-green leaves. It’s ideal for use in the landscape as a low to mid size hedge or even in home foundation plantings where it provides a unique texture that contrasts nicely with all other nearby plants.
In colder climates it tends to grow taller providing a screen in the 6 to 8 foot height range but can be trimmed to maintain as a hedge at any desired height. It will tolerate sun but we grow it in partially shaded sites in our gardens that have acidic soil, which keeps the foliage nice and green. It doesn’t like alkaline or constantly soggy soil.

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Bamboo variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Ruscus Bamboo is easy to grow in any average, well-drained but moist soil and likes a shady to partially shaded site. Morning and/or late afternoon sun with shade or filtered sun during the mid afternoon hours is suggested. During the first growing season after planting, water as needed to keep soil around the plants moist, but not soggy or wet. When established, most bamboo will tolerate periods of dry weather, however, will appreciate an occasional deep soaking if the leaves begin to curl from drought stress. This one does not like constantly soggy or wet soil.
Ruscus Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads, but is much slower spreading than other running bamboo. Therefore, we consider it a clumping bamboo similar in habit to many ornamental grasses. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of some bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or a Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
