Temple Alexandra Aromi Evergreen Azalea – 1 Gallon Pot

An extremely rare evergreen azalea bred by the late, great, Dr. Eugene Aromi, ‘Temple Alexandra’ Azalea is a cross hybrid of ‘Giant Ruffles’ and ‘Pride of Prichard’. The result is a vigorous and large grower to 6 feet tall and wide featuring abundant, large and beautiful, deep pinkish red-purple flowers that stand out beautifully against the arrow-shaped, dark green leaves, which are similar in appearance to those of the Southern Indica Azaleas. Each flower has a splotch of red freckles at the center that extend up the dorsal petal. Even from a distance, this beauty is absolutely stunning in bloom. Heat tolerant to USDA Zone 9b and cold tolerant Zone 6b (-5F), Temple Alexander is one of those plants that will always have you, and the early butterflies, looking forward to spring.

Dr. Eugene Aromi, who bred Temple Alexander, was an Education Professor at the University of South Alabama and an ardent azalea hybridizer for over 30 years. In addition to producing evergreen azalea hybrids, he aimed to breed better deciduous azaleas as well. He made over 1000 crosses and over 100 have been named, of which Temple Alexander is one. He bred his azaleas to enjoyed throughout a much broader range of the US, and especially for the hot and humid climate of the South, but also cold tolerant varieties with all having improved colors, vigor, and sometimes fragrance.
