Description

Triple Crown is the latest and the greatest USDA-ARS blackberry release. It produces distinctly sweet berries, and many consider it to be the tastiest, most flavorful thornless blackberry that the USDA (or anyone else) has ever introduced. Triple Crown is a semi-erect, thornless bush, and unlike the typical Arkansas thornless blackberry varieties, it has an unmistakable trailing growth characteristic. Its fruit matures later in the season than most of the Arkansas thornless varieties, and it sustains a nice, long ripening period (5 weeks) for many days of fruitful picking.
Triple Crown Blackberry has grown very successfully on both the East and West coasts. Maybe the only drawback noted on Triple Crown is that it has received lower marks for its post-harvest potential – as its berries do not seem to handle or store quite as well as some of the other thornless varieties. However, what Triple Crown may lack in post-harvest potential is definitely more than made-up for with its unrivaled flavor and eating quality! There are much worse problems to have than that of being forced to eat lots of delicious berries, rather than putting them up for long-term storage…
Triple Crown is a sun-loving, self-pollinating floricane, and it appears to have good overall disease resistance. Plant and grow the later ripening Triple Crown in your garden, along with some early and mid-season varieties, and have fresh blackberries in all sizes, shapes, and flavors all season-long!
As it is a recent release, the jury is still out on a more exact, more narrow range for the ideal number of chill hours Triple Crown requires in order to reach its greatest fruiting potential. However, the data collected so far indicates that Triple Crown will need 500-800 chill hours to attain its maximum level of fruiting productivity.
NOTE: All of our fruit plants are grown in containers outdoors so they are fully rooted and landscape-ready upon arrival.
Growing Preferences
Triple Crown Thornless Blackberry will produce the best and most berries when growing in full sun. However, where space is limited, a blackberry plant will produce good crops even when grown in shade, which is something no other common fruit plants will do. Blackberries will grow reasonably well in most soil types except for very compacted clay or light chalky soil. In these soils it’ll be worth your time to mix in lots of organic compost to condition the soil and add beneficial nutrients and bacteria plants need to grow healthy. Blackberries grow and produce the best fruit in well-drained but moist fertile soil that is rich in organic matter. They like the soil to hold a good supply of water, especially when the fruits are developing in summer, but not so much water that the soil stays constantly soggy or wet.

My first order that showed up had been destroyed — it looked like by the shipper (the box looked like it had been run over 15 times and put through a weed eater). I emailed Wilson Bros back and they expressed shipped me a replacement — hard to imagine better customer service (5 stars there).
The plant I’m a little curious about. My Navajo I ordered looks like a perfect little blackberry shrub. This has a great root system, but one stalk that is LONG (as in about four feet long) that I weaved through a trellis.
Transplanting went well, and the bare long vine has sprouted leaves up and down it and a few new branches — I’ve just never received a plant that consists of one long vine before. Given it’s health, I’m hopeful.
