Echinacea purpurea is an easy-to-grow North American native perennial plant that has always performed well in our gardens, and ‘White Swan’ is a beautiful white flowering selection. Abundant, 4 to 5 inch diameter daisy-like flowers with slightly drooping white petals surrounding a contrasting bronzy-orange center cone bloom throughout summer. The flowers are perched atop stiff stems that rise to 3 feet high above clumps of lanceolate, dark green leaves. The flowers are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. If spent flowers are left on the plant towards the end of the flowering season, the black seed cones will provide winter interest in the garden and also seeds for goldfinches and other birds. The seeds the birds don’t get will drop to the ground and start new plants, which makes this one a perfect plant for naturalizing in a sunny to partially shaded woodland border.

The genus name of Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos, meaning hedgehog or sea-urchin in reference to the spiny center cone found on most flowers in the genus.

The White Swan Coneflower grows well in garden beds and containers. Growing 24 to 36 inches tall and forming a clump 18 to 24 inches wide, it is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and large mixed container gardens, or in groupings or mass plantings in sunny to partially shaded landscape or woodland borders and perennial gardens. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, cut flower gardens, native plant gardens, cottage cottage gardens, wildflower gardens and white theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  18 to 24 inches for mass plantings; 36 inches or more for space between plants

White Swan Coneflower is very easy to grow in most any well-drained soil of average to low fertility in full sun or part shade. Provide at least 5 hours of direct sun for best flowering. As with many other perennial plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Plants are quite drought tolerant when established, growing in even rocky soils, and are also heat and humidity tolerant in Zones 3-8b. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to ensure good drainage.
